Lifeloss from Dark Ritual, Phyrexian Arena, painlands, and Gerrard's Verdict adds up, so dedicated burn and aggro can race its own life total.
Mass removal (Wrath of God, Pernicious Deed) blunts the creature plan and trades several threats for one card.
Nantuko Shade and Hypnotic Specter are mana — and card-hungry; a flooded or screwed draw leaves the deck without enough disruption or pressure.
Lifegain and cheap blockers (Exalted Angel mirror, Wall effects) neutralize its midsize evasive threats and let control stabilize.

How to win with it

Mulligan any hand that lacks at least one discard spell (Duress or Gerrard's Verdict) or a mana source that enables turn-one disruption; a keepable hand either strips their answer on turn one or deploys a threat on turn two behind a cleared path, and hands with threats but no disruption and no Dark Ritual are usually too slow to keep on the play.
The dream draw opens Dark Ritual into Hypnotic Specter on turn one, since Dark Ritual yields the extra black to hard-cast it off a single swamp; if Hypnotic Specter connects even once the opponent is fighting uphill, so lead Duress first only when their hand is visibly answer-heavy and Hypnotic Specter would die immediately, otherwise jam Hypnotic Specter and make them have it.
The grind plan centers on Phyrexian Arena: once you have traded discard for their answers and stabilized the board with Swords to Plowshares, resolve Phyrexian Arena and let card advantage take over, with Nantuko Shade as a mana sink that converts every unspent black mana into lethal pump and Exalted Angel supplying both a clock and the life to outrun Arena's upkeep cost.
Vindicate is your do-everything answer, so save it for the permanents your other removal cannot touch: use Swords to Plowshares and Smother on creatures, and hold Vindicate for enchantments, artifacts, or an opposing land to deny a color, and sequence Gerrard's Verdict before Vindicate so they discard rather than redeploy before you destroy.
When Exalted Angel is in hand, hold it face-down as a morph until you need the life gain or until Swords to Plowshares and Vindicate are spent; turning it face up on the opponent's end step after they have tapped out is a special action they cannot answer at instant speed and starts the 4/5 flying clock immediately while their hand is empty from your discard.
The key decision each game is whether you are the aggressor or the disruptor: with time to spare, lead on discard (Duress, then Gerrard's Verdict) before landing Hypnotic Specter to guarantee the threat sticks; under pressure, flip the order so Swords to Plowshares and Smother hold the board while Nantuko Shade blocks cheaply and scales into a lethal attacker the moment you have spare black mana.

How to beat it

Apply early pressure or burn to punish its self-inflicted life loss from Dark Ritual, Phyrexian Arena, and Gerrard's Verdict.
Hold creature removal for Hypnotic Specter and Nantuko Shade before they connect, since the Hippie's discard trigger snowballs fast.
Sweep the board with Wrath of God or Pernicious Deed after it overcommits, turning its threat density into a liability.
Keep your hand low or play around discard by deploying must-answer permanents before its Duress/Gerrard's Verdict come online.
Gain life or set up a bigger blocker (Exalted Angel, Wall) to flip the racing math against its midsize evasive clock.
