Zoo
Burn Aggro
Overview
"Zoo pairs one-mana red threats (Jackal Pup, Mogg Fanatic, and Grim Lavamancer) with green beaters like Wild Mongrel and Quirion Dryad, pressuring life totals from the first turn. Grim Lavamancer recycles spent spells and creatures from the graveyard into repeated two-damage pings that clear blockers or close games. Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, Seal of Fire, and Fireblast supply burn reach, while Call of the Herd's flashback and Rancor keep threats coming, separating Zoo from pure burn by winning through both creatures and spells."
Game Plan
Zoo opens on a simple premise: land a one-mana threat on turn one and never let the opponent stabilize. Jackal Pup and Mogg Fanatic establish early board presence and force the opponent into losing trades, while Lightning Bolt and Incinerate clear anything that dares to block. The strategic engine comes online at turn two: Grim Lavamancer turns every spent burn spell and every traded creature into a future 2-damage activation, so the deck's own resource expenditure feeds its late-game reach rather than depleting it. Seal of Fire sits on the battlefield as a taxing threat, feeding Grim Lavamancer the moment it is cracked. Call of the Herd converts a single card into two 3/3 Elephant bodies across two turns, keeping the board full and pressure constant even when the opponent answers the first wave. The deck closes through the combination of accumulated creature damage and direct burn, ideally reserving Fireblast for the final points of life after the creature engine has done the heavy lifting.
When the board stalls or the opponent stabilizes, Zoo shifts plans rather than slowing down. Wild Mongrel and Quirion Dryad are the deck's best long-game threats: Wild Mongrel grows by discarding redundant spells, fueling Grim Lavamancer simultaneously, while Quirion Dryad accumulates power from every noncreature spell cast. Rancor transforms either into a trample threat that demands an answer immediately, and returns to hand if the creature dies, making it a near-permanent source of pressure. Sylvan Library sustains the mid-game hand quality without paying mana, letting the deck fire on both the creature and burn axes while opponents use resources reactively. Naturalize handles enchantments and artifacts that would otherwise lock off the creature damage plan, ensuring no single permanent can shut the engine down cleanly.
