Ur Control
UR Control
Overview
"Ur Control is a mono-focused permission deck built on hard countermagic, anchored by Counterspell and Mana Leak and backed by Fire // Ice and Lightning Bolt to kill creatures and burn at instant speed. Fact or Fiction and Accumulated Knowledge bury opponents in card advantage, keeping countermagic live while the deck stabilizes. It grinds with Grim Lavamancer, exiling graveyard fuel for turn-by-turn pings, then closes with Prophetic Bolt for damage and selection or with Morphling, an untapping finisher shielded by open mana for counters."
Game Plan
UR Control wins by doing almost nothing in the first two turns and making that emptiness hurt. The opening plan is to hold permission mana, Counterspell and Mana Leak, while spending cheap instants to stay ahead: Lightning Bolt and Fire // Ice answer the first threat, and Impulse or Accumulated Knowledge finds the missing piece. Once the opponent is forced to tap out or commit a meaningful spell, a counter trades for it and the deck rebuilds through Fact or Fiction on the end step. The card-advantage engine compounds: each Accumulated Knowledge draws more than the last, and a resolved Fact or Fiction, even when the opponent piles favorably, refuels the hand enough to keep counters live for the next two turns. Standstill accelerates that math by punishing the opponent for developing their board at all, while manlands like Mishra's Factory and Faerie Conclave chip away as threats that never trigger the enchantment.
The clock is thin by design. Grim Lavamancer converts the graveyard stuffed with spent instants into a recurring source of one-damage pings, forcing the opponent to spend removal on a one-drop or absorb steady chip damage. When the game is locked and the opponent's hand is exhausted, Prophetic Bolt closes the last few points while digging four cards deep for whatever counter or removal is still needed. Morphling arrives as the game-ending finisher in lists that can afford the five mana, protected through every combat with its activated abilities and kept out of burn range by paying blue to adjust its toughness. The deck rarely wins quickly; it wins by rendering every line the opponent has moot, then delivering damage from sources they cannot meaningfully interact with.
