Threshold
Threshold Tempo
Overview
"Threshold is a cantrip-driven tempo deck that fills its graveyard with Mental Note, Portent, and Gush to switch on threshold, turning Nimble Mongoose into a shroud-protected 3/3 and Werebear into a 4/4 that also taps for green mana. Quirion Dryad and Sylvan Library reinforce the board and card flow, while Counterspell, Daze, Swords to Plowshares, Lightning Bolt, and Fire // Ice defend the threat and clear blockers. It closes the game by riding a single cheap creature behind a wall of countermagic and removal."
Game Plan
Threshold operates as a two-phase machine: spend the first three turns assembling a graveyard and landing a threat, then spend the rest of the game making that threat impossible to answer. The opening plan is to deploy Nimble Mongoose or Werebear on turn one or two, then immediately begin milling toward seven cards in the graveyard through Mental Note, Portent, and Gush. Gush is particularly explosive because returning two Islands refunds the mana cost and frequently bridges from five to seven cards in a single action. Once threshold flips, the math changes completely. Nimble Mongoose becomes a 3/3 with shroud that targeted removal cannot touch, Werebear becomes a 4/4 that also generates mana, and Quirion Dryad has grown off every cantrip and spell cast to that point. Counterspell, Daze, Swords to Plowshares, Lightning Bolt, and Fire // Ice hold the board clear while the clock ticks down.
The closing plan has two gears. In the tempo gear, the deck simply protects a single shroud creature and attacks until the opponent is dead, since Nimble Mongoose's immunity to removal makes this a favorable race once the life total difference is large enough. The control gear deploys Armageddon or Winter Orb once a threshold creature is already in play: Armageddon resets the mana parity to zero while Werebear's mana ability keeps pressure available, and Winter Orb throttles rebuilding while the opponent sits helpless. Mystic Enforcer fills the role of a secondary finisher when the game goes deep, arriving as a 3/3 pre-threshold and upgrading to a 6/6 with flying and trample the moment the graveyard count is met. Sylvan Library and Call of the Herd supply the raw card advantage that keeps pressure consistent through disruption and attrition.
