Survival Opposition
Survival Opposition
Overview
"Survival Opposition chains Survival of the Fittest using Squee, Goblin Nabob as a recurring discard outlet to tutor Deranged Hermit and flood the board with Squirrel tokens, then taps down the opponent's lands and creatures with Opposition and Tradewind Rider. Birds of Paradise, Wall of Roots, and Wall of Blossoms accelerate and stall early, while Quirion Ranger untaps creatures to fuel Opposition and Basking Rootwalla returns for free via madness. The deck converts its tutor engine into a soft-lock that strands the opponent under a growing token army."
Game Plan
Survival Opposition prioritizes finding Survival of the Fittest by turn two off a mana creature (Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, or Wall of Roots) and establishing the Squee, Goblin Nabob loop as quickly as possible. Once both pieces are in play, the deck pays one green mana each turn to discard Squee, Goblin Nabob, retrieve any creature from the library, and then recover Squee, Goblin Nabob from the graveyard at the next upkeep, an activated ability that countermagic cannot touch. The primary tutor target is Deranged Hermit, which enters and creates four Squirrel tokens; with Opposition in hand or tutored next, those five bodies collectively freeze the opponent's lands and best permanents each turn. Gaea's Cradle converts a wide token board into a burst of mana, enabling additional Survival of the Fittest activations or casting a second payoff in the same turn.
When the lock is disrupted or slow to assemble, the deck shifts into an attrition posture. Wall of Blossoms and Wall of Roots absorb early pressure while generating cards or mana, giving the engine time to rebuild. Quirion Ranger returns a Forest to hand to untap a tapped creature, most valuably Tradewind Rider, letting the deck bounce a second permanent per turn when Opposition is also online. Natural Order sacrifices any green creature to put Verdant Force directly into play, adding a Saproling token every upkeep even without Deranged Hermit. Genesis in the graveyard provides steady creature recursion each upkeep, ensuring answered threats return to hand and the engine never runs dry.
