Overview

"RG Sligh (Gruul Aggro) is Premodern's red-green beatdown deck, pairing the cheap threats and burn of mono-red Sligh with a green splash for staying power. Mogg Fanatic, Jackal Pup, and Grim Lavamancer open on a fast clock while Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, Seal of Fire, and Fireblast double as removal and reach to the face. The green splash buys the resilience mono-red lacks: Sylvan Library refills an emptied hand, Call of the Herd and Rancor grind through removal, and River Boa, Quirion Dryad, and Wild Mongrel add efficient, hard-to-kill bodies. Treetop Village and Wasteland complete a manabase that pressures the opponent's lands while still attacking."

Deck Weaknesses

Life — gain vulnerability - With most of its reach stored on burn spells, a meaningful life swing erases several cards of damage at once and the deck has only Sulfuric Vortex out of the board as a structural answer.
Engine fragility — Its edge over mono-red lives on Grim Lavamancer, Call of the Herd, Sylvan Library, and Rancor; graveyard exile and enchantment removal dismantle those engines and collapse it back into a hand-light aggro deck.
Greedy manabase — A low land count with Wasteland, fetchlands (Wooded Foothills, Bloodstained Mire), and Karplusan Forest pinging for damage means it can both screw on lands and lose meaningful life to its own mana against a fast clock.
Limited refuel under attrition — Once the opening salvo is spent, Cursed Scroll and Sylvan Library are the only sustained card advantage; decks that trade evenly and survive past turn six can grind it down.

How to win with it

Mulligan for an early threat plus action: a keepable hand has a one- or two-drop (Jackal Pup, Mogg Fanatic, Grim Lavamancer, River Boa) with two to three lands and burn or Call of the Herd. Ship hands that are all burn and no clock, or all creatures and no reach - the deck wins by combining both, and a hand missing either half stalls out.
Lead with the threat that has to connect: Jackal Pup turn one over Mogg Fanatic when you hold both, since Pup is pure clock while Fanatic's value is its sacrifice. Drop Seal of Fire turn one when nothing better is live - it banks a removal spell on the board, holds back a blocker, and frees that mana later. Grim Lavamancer wants a stocked graveyard, so spend cheap burn early and let it convert the spent cards into repeatable reach.
Use the green splash to grind, not just to curve out: Call of the Herd is two bodies from one card and the single best topdeck in attrition games, Rancor keeps coming back to push damage through blockers, and Sylvan Library turns a flooding draw into gas. Against decks that trade one-for-one, these cards are why RG Sligh beats mono-red - hold them as your refuel rather than dumping them into a removal-heavy board.
Attack the manabase as a second axis: Wasteland on a key nonbasic and Treetop Village as an uncounterable, removal-dodging threat let you keep pressure on through sweepers and counters. Treetop is also your way to win post-board when the opponent has answered every spell - activate it to attack, then return to defense, and it survives sorcery-speed removal aimed at your hand.
Close with burn to the face once the board is contested: Fireblast for free by sacrificing two Mountains is the surprise finisher - always recount the opponent to twenty before tapping out, and if they are at four or less with Fireblast in hand, hold the lands and end it. Cursed Scroll converts a near-empty hand into reliable late reach, so empty down to a single known card to keep it firing every turn.
The recurring mistake is spending premium burn on creatures a body could trade with: sacrifice Mogg Fanatic into a one-toughness blocker, block with River Boa (regenerate) or a token, and save Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, and Fireblast for the dome or for threats your creatures cannot profitably fight. Every burn spell traded for a creature is damage you will not recover toward zero.

How to beat it

Life gain blunts the whole plan: the deck stores its damage across Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, Seal of Fire, and Fireblast, so a single large life swing invalidates several cards at once and buys the turns you need to stabilize - but expect a sideboarded Sulfuric Vortex or Hull Breach answer, so protect the lifegain or deploy it when they are tapped out.
The green splash is what makes it resilient, so target that, not the burn: exile-based graveyard hate shuts off Grim Lavamancer and the flashback half of Call of the Herd, and enchantment removal on Rancor or Sylvan Library strips the card advantage that lets it grind. Take those engines away and you are left fighting the weaker mono-red core that runs out of gas.
Sweepers are strong but mind the manlands and Rancor: a board wipe answers the creatures, yet Treetop Village and a recurring Rancor rebuild the clock, so pair the sweeper with pressure of your own rather than passing back to a topdeck war the RG deck is built to win.
Wasteland plus a low land count means it can stumble - keeping basics and a slightly higher land count denies the free tempo, and trading early creatures one-for-one drags the game toward turn six or later, where outside of Cursed Scroll and Sylvan Library the deck has limited ways to refuel.
Efficient instant-speed removal and good blocks beat the one-at-a-time threat deployment better than edicts do: the deck rarely floods the board, so forced-sacrifice effects often miss the specific threat you need gone, while a timely block or kill spell on Quirion Dryad or an unblocked Treetop denies the burst turns that close games.
