Against fast aggro, spending early turns blowing up lands can leave you dead on board.
Phyrexian Arena and Dark Ritual life loss add up against burn or evasive clocks.
Decks with cheap, mana — light threats can function through the land destruction.

How to win with it

Mulligan any hand that cannot cast a turn-one Dark Ritual or a turn-two land destruction spell without it: a keepable hand needs at least one Dark Ritual plus one of Rancid Earth, Rain of Tears, Icequake, or Choking Sands and two or three Swamps, while hands stuffed with land destruction but no accelerant are keeps only if they also contain a follow-up engine like Braids, Cabal Minion or Phyrexian Arena.
The dream draw is Dark Ritual into Rancid Earth or Rain of Tears on turn one, a second land destruction spell on turn two, then Braids, Cabal Minion on turn three while the opponent sits on one or zero lands: from there Braids, Cabal Minion taxes a land every upkeep that they cannot replace while you keep deploying normally, turning a symmetric sacrifice into a one-sided lock.
Sequence land destruction to strand spells, not to trade evenly: lead Dark Ritual into Icequake to blow up whichever land produces the most colors or feeds acceleration, and save Choking Sands for their nonbasic lands since it can only target nonbasics, so you keep them off their second or third mana and leave key spells dead in hand.
Hold Smother and Diabolic Edict instead of spending them on the first creature you see: Smother only kills a creature of converted mana cost three or less and Diabolic Edict makes them sacrifice a creature of their choice, so banking both means you still have an answer for the threat that would otherwise outrun the lock once Braids, Cabal Minion is online.
When the fast lock does not assemble, grind with Duress into Phyrexian Arena: strip their best disruptive noncreature spell with Duress, then resolve Phyrexian Arena so every upkeep feeds you another land destruction spell faster than they rebuild, and fire Skeletal Scrying as a one-shot refill when Phyrexian Arena is not in hand and you need lock pieces immediately.
Charge Powder Keg as your answer to permanents Smother and Diabolic Edict cannot reach: let fuse counters accumulate to the converted mana cost you actually need to clear rather than cracking it early, then detonate and follow with Braids, Cabal Minion or Contagion to keep their board empty while you reassemble the mana denial.

How to beat it

Apply early pressure with cheap creatures that operate under their land destruction.
Exploit Braids, Cabal Minion's symmetry by keeping a board they cannot afford to mirror.
Punish their life loss from Phyrexian Arena and Dark Ritual with burn or a fast clock.
Keep extra lands and low-curve spells so a Rain of Tears or Icequake does not strand you.
Kill or pressure them before Braids and repeated land destruction lock the game up.
