Balancing Tings
Balancing Act Combo
Overview
"Balancing Tings is a combo deck that strips its own board to nothing, then casts Balancing Act to force opponents to sacrifice permanents and discard down to its tiny total, wrecking their position for almost no card cost. It self-empties with Lion's Eye Diamond and Lotus Petal, which sacrifice themselves for mana, while Burning Wish fetches extra copies of Balancing Act from outside the game. Quiet Speculation buries Roar of the Wurm to flash back as 6/6 Wurms for the kill, and Orim's Chant locks the opponent out to protect the combo turn."
Game Plan
Balancing Tings is a combo deck that manufactures a deliberately lopsided board state and then punishes the opponent for being the one holding permanents. The opening turns are entirely devoted to resource destruction on your own side: Lotus Petal, Lion's Eye Diamond, Archaeological Dig, and the sacrifice lands (Ancient Spring, Geothermal Crevice, Ruins of Trokair) all exist to be spent and discarded so that by the combo turn you control as close to zero permanents as possible. Quiet Speculation does the critical preparatory work, loading Roar of the Wurm into the graveyard for the kill and often picking up Deep Analysis alongside it. Burning Wish then fetches Balancing Act directly to hand, and Orim's Chant, or Abeyance, locks the opponent out of instant-speed interference while the sorcery resolves. The result is a wrath that costs the opponent everything while costing this deck almost nothing.
Once Balancing Act has wiped the table clean, Roar of the Wurm flashbacks immediately for four mana, dropping a 6/6 Wurm token onto a freshly emptied board. That is the primary closing mechanism: a 6/6 attacking into nothing ends games in two swings. When the main combo line is disrupted, the deck has two grind angles: Deep Analysis provides flashback card draw to reassemble pieces across multiple turns, and Recoup can rebuy a countered or discarded Balancing Act from the graveyard to threaten the kill a second time. In the builds that run Anurid Brushhopper, there is also a resilient threat that can be bounced before the wipe and redeployed on the cleared board, giving the deck a credible Plan B when the pure combo line stalls.
